Scenic Drives - Highway 9 from Sedro-Woolley to Deming, Washington

The stretch of Highway 9 from Deming to Sedro-Woolley,
Washington, is one of the Northwest's best-kept secrets.
This scenic drive connects Highways 542 (the Mt. Baker
Highway) to Highway 20 (the North Cascade Highway)
through the small communities of Van Zandt, Acme, and
Wickersham.

It's an easy drive on a well-maintained two-lane highway,
through vistas of farmland and deep green rolling hills. In
the tiny town of Acme you'll find a post office and services.
As you near the Mt. Baker Highway, at a bend in the road,
visit
Everybody's Store, a local landmark, and just across
the road, Josh VanderYacht Memorial Park, where you
can picnic and play outdoor handball or basketball.
Everybody's Store even has the sports equipment to loan.

VanderYacht Park was constructed by the local community
as a memorial to a local youth, and also includes a great
picnic shelter with a built-in grill and a children's play area.
Use is generally on a first-come, first-served basis. This
beautiful small park is one of the area's best secrets.

Just south of Everybody's Store, there is public access to
the Nooksack River. For directions to the access point,
ask at the store.

Continuing west along Highway 20 is a scenic bridge
crossing the Nooksack. The west end of this drive meets
with Highway 542. Turn south on the Mt. Baker Highway to
the town of Deming. Nearby RV camping is available at the
Deming Log Show grounds, just south of Deming, west on
Cedarville Road (look for signs).

North from the Highway 9 - Mt. Baker Highway intersection
you can continue through another picturesque community,
Maple Falls, and from there, west to RV camping at Silver
Lake Park, or on north to Mt. Baker.

On the way, just north of Highway 9, check out another of
the Northwest's best secrets, the Deming Homestead
Eagle Park on Truck Road. Truck Road turns east off of
Highway 542. Watch for the eagle park turnoff to the right
along Truck Road.

The park is an eagle sanctuary along the north fork of the
Nooksack River, maintained by the Whatcom Land Trust.
The park is great for walking, picnicking and eagle-watching.
